📍 About this Locality

Jalpaiguri is the headquarters of Jalpaiguri district in north Bengal, a city on the Teesta and Karala rivers at the foot of the Bhutan Himalayan foothills, surrounded by some of the finest tea estates in Bharat and serving as the administrative and commercial hub for the tea economy, the Gorumara and Jaldapara wildlife sanctuaries and the Dooars forest belt. The Dooars (the doors to Bhutan and the north-east) is one of Bharat great wildlife corridors, home to one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, bison and leopards.

📜 Historical Roots

Jalpaiguri district was the administrative centre for the vast territory between the Teesta and the Sankosh, a zone of dense forests, elephant herds and the tea estates established from the 1860s during the pre-independence period. The district capital served the tea economy whose workers built their communities in the Dooars forest clearings.
