📍 About this Locality

Cooch Behar is the headquarters of Cooch Behar district and the former capital of the Koch Rajbari dynasty whose ornate palace (1887, modelled on Buckingham Palace) is the most magnificent royal building of north Bengal. The Cooch Behar district had the most complex border geography in the world with 51 Indian enclaves within Bangladesh and 28 Bangladesh enclaves within India (including the only third-order enclave in world history) exchanged in the Land Boundary Agreement of 2015, ending one of geography most unusual geopolitical puzzles.

📜 Historical Roots

The Koch dynasty ruled this corner of north Bengal from the 16th century. Their palace, built by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan in 1887, reflects the dynasty cultural ambition. The enclave situation arose from the partition of the Koch kingdom in the 17th century and persisted until the India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement of 2015.

Durga Puja in Cooch Behar was historically patronised by the royal family and retains a distinctively royal character. The palace grounds festival is a major annual event. The winter months are most pleasant for heritage visits. Rashmela (November) is the major local fair.
