Gyalshing (also known as Geyzing) is the headquarters of West Sikkim district, a small hill town with a peaceful character and access to some of Sikkim most important Buddhist monasteries. The Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant gompas in Sikkim, established in 1705 CE, is located near Gyalshing and is the head monastery of the Nyingmapa sect in Sikkim, making it one of the most spiritually important Buddhist institutions in the eastern Himalayas. The Rabdentse ruins, the ancient capital of the Chogyal kingdom, are nearby.

📜 Historical Roots

Pemayangtse Monastery was established in 1705 CE and is one of the most important Buddhist institutions in the eastern Himalayas. The nearby Rabdentse ruins were the second capital of the Chogyal kingdom of Sikkim before Gangtok became the capital. The ruins of the royal palace and the monastery complex at Rabdentse represent the most significant archaeological heritage of the Sikkimese kingdom.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Pemayangtse Cham (masked dance festival, February-March) is the most spectacular monastic celebration, with elaborate costumed performances dramatising Buddhist themes. The rhododendron season (March-April) is beautiful in the West Sikkim forests. Losar (Tibetan New Year) and Buddha Purnima are major Buddhist celebrations. The post-monsoon October-November season is most pleasant for visiting the monastery and ruins.
