Berhampore (Baharampur) is the headquarters of Murshidabad district, the gateway to the extraordinary heritage landscape of Murshidabad, the last capital of undivided Bengal under the Nawabs who presided over one of the wealthiest states in the world before the Battle of Plassey (1757) that began Bharat pre-independence era subjugation. The Hazarduari Palace (thousand doors, 1837), the imambaras, the Katra Mosque and the tombs of the Nawabs create an 18th century courtly landscape of remarkable preservation.

📜 Historical Roots

Murshidabad was the capital of Bengal under the Nawabs when Bengal was the wealthiest province of Bharat. The defeat of Siraj-ud-Daulah at the Battle of Plassey by Robert Clive on 23 June 1757, achieved through the treachery of Mir Jafar, marked the beginning of pre-independence period domination of Bharat, making Murshidabad one of the most historically significant landscapes in the story of pre-independence period encounter.
