📍 About this Locality

Barasat is the headquarters of North 24 Parganas district, one of the most populous districts in Bharat, a rapidly urbanising satellite city of Kolkata known historically for the Barasat Uprising of 1831 led by Titu Mir, the Muslim peasant reformer who built a bamboo fort at Narkelberia and led an uprising against indigo planters and zamindars, one of the earliest organised peasant revolts in Bengal against pre-independence era-era exploitation.

Titu Mir (1782-1831), the Muslim reformer who built his bamboo fort at Narkelberia in the Barasat area and organised peasant resistance against indigo planters and Hindu zamindars, was killed when Company troops destroyed the fort. His uprising is celebrated as one of the earliest organised peasant revolts in Bengal and a precursor of the broader anti-pre-independence period consciousness.
