The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor is one of Bharat's most important marine protected areas, encompassing 281 square kilometres of coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves and tropical islands. Wandoor beach is the departure point for glass-bottomed boat rides into the park. The residential localities of Dollygunj and surrounding areas house Port Blair's growing population in a more spacious, semi-suburban setting compared to the city centre.

The southwest monsoon (May-September) brings rough seas to Wandoor and the marine park is less accessible during this period. The ideal season for visiting the marine park and coral reefs is October-May when underwater visibility is at its best. The mangroves and forests are at their most lush during and after the monsoon. Sea turtle nesting season runs through the monsoon months on undisturbed beaches.
