Diglipur is the largest town in North Andaman, the northernmost settled area of the Andaman Islands accessible to civilians, and the gateway to some of the archipelago's most spectacular natural environments. Saddle Peak, the highest point in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 732 metres, rises dramatically from the forested interior near Diglipur. The Ross and Smith islands, connected by a natural sandbar that appears and disappears with the tides, are among the most photographed natural phenomena in the archipelago. Diglipur and the surrounding North Andaman region are known for their relatively pristine environment. Turtle nesting beaches, freshwater streams, tropical rainforest and the rich marine life of the northern reefs make this one of Bharat's most ecologically significant zones.
North Andaman's relatively late settlement by mainland Indian communities, primarily Bengali settlers brought after Partition, gives Diglipur and surrounding areas a distinctive cultural character. The settlers built agricultural communities in the dense forest that contrast with the indigenous Andamanese heritage of the broader island chain.
Government ferry from Port Blair to Diglipur approximately 12 to 18 hours by sea. Air services via helicopter from Port Blair on select days. Road connectivity within North Andaman.
Diglipur is most accessible during the October-May calm sea season when the ferry journey from Port Blair is comfortable. The monsoon months (May-September) bring heavy rainfall that makes North Andaman's forests dramatically lush. Turtle nesting on the beaches of the region occurs primarily during the monsoon months. Leatherback sea turtles, the world's largest, nest on these shores.
