Puri is one of the four sacred dhams of Bharat, the site of the Jagannath temple, one of the most important and distinctive Hindu pilgrimage centres in the world. Lord Jagannath is worshipped here in a tradition that is uniquely egalitarian, where devotees of all castes eat together in the world largest community kitchen. The Rath Yatra, when the three deities are taken in massive chariots through the main street, is one of the world most spectacular religious processions, drawing millions of pilgrims annually. Puri is also a beautiful beach town where the Bay of Bengal creates a golden coastline beloved by pilgrims and tourists alike.

📜 Historical Roots

The Jagannath temple, built in its current form by the Eastern Ganga king Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva in the 12th century CE, has been one of the most important pilgrimage centres of Bharat for nearly a thousand years. The Rath Yatra tradition, which inspired the English word Juggernaut from the name Jagannath, is described in accounts by the travellers Ibn Battuta and Marco Polo.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Rath Yatra (Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, June-July) is the most spectacular event of the Puri calendar, when millions of pilgrims converge and the three chariots are pulled through the Bada Danda (Grand Road). The post-monsoon October-February season is most pleasant for beach visits.
