📍 About this Locality

Baripada is the headquarters of Mayurbhanj district in northern Odisha, the largest district by area in Odisha and one of the most tribal-rich districts in Bharat. The Santhal, Ho and Munda communities form a significant portion of the population, and the district forests include the Simlipal National Park and Biosphere Reserve, among the most biodiverse in eastern Bharat. The Baripada Rath Yatra is unique in that it begins one day before the Puri Rath Yatra. Simlipal, home to Bengal tigers, elephants and the rare melanistic tigers (black tigers), is one of Bharat most ecologically significant protected areas.

📜 Historical Roots

Mayurbhanj was the seat of the Mayurbhanj princely state whose rulers maintained a tradition of conservation that contributed to the preservation of the Simlipal forests. The district Santhal, Ho and Munda communities maintain some of the most vigorous tribal cultural traditions in eastern Bharat.

Baripada is approximately 240 km from Bhubaneswar. NH-18 road connectivity. Nearest railway station is Balasore (60 km). Baripada Airport has limited connectivity.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The Baripada Rath Yatra (June-July) is the most significant festival held the day before Puri famous Rath Yatra. Simlipal is best visited October-May (closed during monsoon). The Santhal Sohrai festival (October-November) is an important tribal cultural event. Durga Puja is observed by the Hindu community.
