📍 About this Locality

Keonjhar is the headquarters of Keonjhar district in northern Odisha, a district extraordinarily rich in iron ore and manganese deposits that have made it one of the most mineralised districts in Bharat. The Thakurani hill iron ore deposits of Keonjhar feed steel plants across India. The district also has a significant tribal population, primarily the Ho and Munda communities, whose cultural traditions and the forested landscape create a setting of ecological and cultural richness.

📜 Historical Roots

Keonjhar was the seat of the Keonjhar princely state, one of Odisha major feudatory states, whose territory encompassed the mineral-rich northern forests. The development of the iron ore mining industry in the post-independence period transformed the district economic character while the tribal communities maintained their cultural traditions.

The mining and industrial economy operates year-round. The tribal communities observe seasonal festivals including the Karam festival (August) of the Ho and Munda communities. The Gonasika sacred site on the Baitarani river sees pilgrimage during Shivaratri. The post-monsoon October-February season is most pleasant.
