Kokrajhar is the headquarters of Kokrajhar district and the administrative capital of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) β the autonomous self-governing body that administers the Bodo people's ancestral homeland in the plains of lower Assam. The Bodo people β Assam's largest plains tribal community β have their cultural and political centre at Kokrajhar, which serves as the seat of the BTC legislature and administration.
The Bodo community's cultural life is extraordinarily rich β the Bagurumba dance (performed by women in traditional dokhona dress), the Bwisagu festival, the Bathou religion (the animist spiritual tradition of the Bodos centred on the Siju plant), the traditional music of the sifung flute and kham drum, and the distinctive Bodo cuisine of rice beer and fermented foods define a living cultural heritage of great depth and beauty.
The Bodo people are among the oldest inhabitants of the Brahmaputra valley β their ancestral presence in the Assam plains predates most recorded history of the region. The Bodoland Territorial Council, established in 2003 under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, represents the constitutional recognition of the Bodo people's right to self-governance in their ancestral homeland.
Kokrajhar railway station on the Assam Rail Link (New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati line). NH-17 road connectivity. Approximately 240 km from Guwahati.
Bwisagu β the Bodo new year festival celebrated in April during Rongali Bihu season β is Kokrajhar's most vibrant community celebration, with Bagurumba dance performances, traditional music and community feasting. The monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rainfall to the Brahmaputra plains. The Bathou Puja festivals through the year mark the Bodo spiritual calendar. Winter months are the most pleasant for the region.
