Jorhat is one of Assam's most important cities — the last capital of the Ahom kingdom before the pre-independence period, a city of deep historical significance and the commercial and cultural hub of upper Assam's tea country. The surrounding Jorhat district contains one of the highest concentrations of tea gardens in the world — the fertile red soil, rainfall pattern and elevation of upper Assam create ideal conditions for Assam tea, the strong, malty brew that is the foundation of Bharat's tea culture and a major export commodity.

Jorhat is home to the Tocklai Tea Research Institute — one of the world's oldest and most important tea research centres, established in 1911, whose work on tea cultivation, processing and quality improvement has shaped the global tea industry. The city also has Jorhat Engineering College and several important cultural institutions.

📜 Historical Roots

Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom kingdom — the Tai-Ahom dynasty that ruled Assam for nearly 600 years (1228-1826 CE) without ever being conquered by the Mughal Empire, one of the most remarkable political achievements in medieval Bharat. The Ahom kingdom's resistance to thirteen Mughal invasions is celebrated in the Battle of Saraighat (1671) and the heroism of Lachit Borphukan whose memory is one of Assam's most powerful cultural symbols.

Rongali Bihu (April) is the most joyful celebration — the new year festival of the Assamese people marked by Bihu dance, Husori singing and community feasting. The Majuli island Vaishnavite sattra festivals are most accessible in the dry season (October-April).
