Sivasagar is the most historically significant city of Assam β the ancient capital of the Ahom kingdom for the longest and most glorious period of its rule, and a city whose monuments to Ahom civilisation are among the most important historical sites in all of Northeast Bharat. The Sivasagar tank β one of the largest human-made tanks in Bharat, built by Ahom queen Ambika in 1733 CE β is surrounded by three magnificent temples: the Shivadol, Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol, whose towering spires reflected in the tank create one of Assam's most iconic architectural compositions.
The surrounding Sivasagar district is the heartland of Assam's oil industry β Bharat's first oil well was drilled at Digboi nearby, and the ONGC operations in this region have been a cornerstone of Bharat's petroleum economy. The Charaideo Maidams β the royal burial mounds of the Ahom kings β nearby are a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate.
Sivasagar (originally Rangpur) was the Ahom capital for most of the kingdom's extraordinary 600-year rule. The Ahom kings who ruled from here built the Sivasagar tank, the magnificent temples, the Kareng Ghar royal palace and the Talatal Ghar β a seven-storied underground palace, of which four floors are below ground β representing an architectural and engineering achievement of the first order in medieval Bharat.
Simaluguri Junction railway station (approximately 10 km) on the Northeast Frontier Railway. NH-37 road connectivity. Approximately 360 km from Guwahati.
Maha Shivaratri (February-March) at the Shivadol temple draws large numbers of devotees β the towering Shiva temple is at its most spiritually charged during this festival. Rongali Bihu (April) is the most joyful community celebration. The Sivasagar tank and surrounding temples are most beautiful in the post-monsoon October-November period when the tank is full. The Ali Ai Ligang festival of the Mising community (February) is another important seasonal celebration.
