Tinsukia is the commercial heart of the easternmost part of Assam — a busy commercial city that serves as the trading hub for upper Assam's tea, oil and timber economy. The name Tinsukia refers to the three sukias (revenue divisions) that comprised this area historically. The city has a particularly diverse character — Assamese, Bengali, Marwari, Bihari, Nepali and tribal communities have all contributed to building Tinsukia's commercial economy.

The surrounding Tinsukia district contains the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park — one of the few places in Bharat where wild horses (feral horses that became wild after a flood) roam free, alongside tigers, elephants and the Gangetic river dolphin in the Brahmaputra. The Stilwell Road — the historic World War II supply road from Ledo to China — begins from the Tinsukia district.

The monsoon season (June-September) is the most dramatic for the Brahmaputra basin ecology — the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park floods partially and the wild horses are seen in higher areas. Tea harvesting peaks in the second flush (May-June) and autumn flush (September-November). Winter months are most pleasant for wildlife viewing.
