Karimganj — now officially named Sribhumi — is the headquarters of Karimganj district in the Barak valley of southern Assam, a city with a distinct Bengali cultural identity that reflects its position in the predominantly Bengali-speaking Barak valley region. The Barak valley's culture, language and community traditions are more closely aligned with the Bengali literary and cultural tradition than with the Brahmaputra valley Assamese mainstream, giving the region a distinctive character within Assam.

The city sits near the Kushiara river and serves as a commercial centre for the tea gardens, paddy fields and the markets of the southern Assam border region. 📜 Historical Roots

The Barak valley's Bengali character was shaped by the geography of the region — the valley's natural connections are with the Sylhet region (now in Bangladesh) rather than with the Brahmaputra valley.
