Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, a hill city of remarkable natural beauty set among forested ridges in the Himalayan foothills, serving as the seat of the state government, the Raj Bhavan, the State Legislative Assembly and the administrative infrastructure of Bharat's easternmost state. The city is relatively young as a capital, developed in the post-independence decades, but sits near the ancient Ita Fort whose 14th century brick fortification gives the capital its name and historical depth. Itanagar's character reflects the proud diversity of Arunachal Pradesh, a state of extraordinary tribal richness where over 100 distinct tribes and sub-tribes speak their own languages, practise their own traditions and maintain cultural identities of extraordinary antiquity.
The Ita Fort of Itanagar, built in the 14th to 15th century CE and believed to be associated with the Jitari kingdom, represents one of the earliest documented historical structures in Arunachal Pradesh. The fort's massive brick construction in a remote Himalayan hill location speaks to the civilisational sophistication of the historical communities of the eastern Himalayan foothills.
Naharlagun railway station (15 km from Itanagar) is on the Northeast Frontier Railway. Hollongi Airport (Donyi Polo Airport) has domestic flights. NH-415 road connectivity.
The monsoon (June-September) brings heavy rainfall to the Himalayan foothills and the city's natural setting is most lush during this season. The tribal communities celebrate their respective harvest and cultural festivals through the year. Nyokum Yullo (Nyishi, February), Ponung (Adi, January) and other festivals bring colour to the capital's cultural calendar. Donyi Polo Airport connects the capital to the national air network.
