Koloriang is the headquarters of Kurung Kumey district in Arunachal Pradesh, one of the youngest and least populated districts of the state, a landscape of deep river valleys, high forested ridges and the ancient communities of the Nyishi and Hill Miri (Miji) tribal peoples whose way of life has been shaped over millennia by the dramatic terrain of the eastern Himalayan ranges. The Kurung and Kumey rivers, from which the district takes its name, flow through valleys of extraordinary beauty. The forests of this district range from subtropical broadleaf at lower elevations to temperate oak and rhododendron forest higher up, supporting significant biodiversity including red panda, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear and the exceptional bird diversity of the eastern Himalayas.
The Hill Miri (Miji) people of Kurung Kumey district are one of the lesser-known but culturally distinctive tribal communities of Arunachal Pradesh. Their oral traditions, community festivals, weaving traditions and forest knowledge represent an unbroken cultural continuity with their Himalayan homeland that stretches back centuries before any recorded history.
Koloriang is accessible by road from Itanagar approximately 200 km through the Arunachal Pradesh hill road network. Helicopter services from Itanagar on select days. Road conditions are seasonal.
The monsoon season (June-September) brings extremely heavy rainfall to the Kurung Kumey valleys. The post-monsoon October-November season sees community harvest festivals including the Miji Chalo Loku festival. Winter months (December-February) see higher elevations receiving snowfall. Rhododendron blooms in March-April transform the hillsides with colour.
