Daporijo is the headquarters of Upper Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh, a small hill town on the Subansiri river that serves as the administrative centre for one of Arunachal's most culturally rich districts, home to the Tagin people whose traditions, oral literature, weaving craft and spiritual practices represent one of the most distinctive indigenous cultures of the eastern Himalayas. The Subansiri river, one of the Brahmaputra's major tributaries, flows through Upper Subansiri in a landscape of deep gorges, forested ridges and high grasslands. The Tagin community's intimate knowledge of this landscape, expressed through their oral traditions, medicinal plant knowledge and agricultural practices, represents an irreplaceable cultural and ecological heritage.
The Tagin people of Upper Subansiri have lived in the high valleys of the eastern Himalayas for centuries. Their origin traditions, clan systems, community governance and spiritual practices centred on the Uyu (divine creator principle) represent a complete and self-sufficient civilisational system developed in dialogue with one of the world's most dramatic mountain landscapes.
Daporijo is accessible by road from Itanagar and North Lakhimpur in Assam, journey times vary significantly with road conditions and season. Helicopter services from Itanagar on select days.
The monsoon season (June-September) is the most challenging period with heavy rainfall causing landslides and the Subansiri river flooding its banks. The post-monsoon harvest season (October-November) sees the Tagin community's most important festivals. The Mole Lapang festival celebrates the harvest with community feasting, singing and recitation of oral traditions. Winter months see higher areas receiving snowfall. Spring brings the most pleasant weather for this mountain district.
