Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and one of the most beautiful hill towns in Northeast Bharat, known as the celebrated for its rolling green landscapes and living Khasi culture for its rolling green hills, pine forests, misty valleys and the pleasant climate. The city is the cultural capital of the Khasi people, one of the world few surviving matrilineal societies where lineage, inheritance and family identity pass through the mother line. Meghalaya means the Abode of Clouds and the Khasi Hills around Shillong contain Mawsynram and Cherrapunji, the wettest places on earth.

📜 Historical Roots

Shillong became the capital of undivided Assam during the pre-independence period and was known for its salubrious climate. When Meghalaya was created as a separate state in 1972, Shillong became its capital. The Khasi people matrilineal tradition, maintained for centuries, is one of the most remarkable living examples of matrilineal social organisation in the world.

Shillong is approximately 100 km from Guwahati. NH-6 road connectivity. Umroi Airport has limited domestic flights. Guwahati is the nearest major rail and air hub.

The monsoon season (June-September) transforms the Khasi Hills into a landscape of extraordinary beauty with waterfalls, mist and intense green. The Nongkrem dance festival (October-November) is the Khasi community most important cultural celebration. Christmas is observed with great enthusiasm. The Shillong Autumn Festival (October) is a major cultural event.
