📍 About this Locality

Nongpoh is the headquarters of Ri Bhoi district in Meghalaya, a town on the NH-6 highway connecting Guwahati to Shillong, serving as the first significant settlement encountered when entering Meghalaya from Assam. The town is a transit and commercial hub for the journey between Guwahati and Shillong. The surrounding Ri Bhoi district is known for its orange, pineapple and ginger cultivation and for the sacred forests (law kyntang) maintained by the Khasi community, representing one of the oldest and most effective forms of community-based biodiversity conservation in Bharat.

📜 Historical Roots

Ri Bhoi district and the surrounding Khasi Hills have been home to the Khasi people for centuries. The sacred grove tradition (law kyntang) of the Khasi community, in which certain forest areas are preserved as sacred to the deity and never disturbed, is one of Bharat oldest forms of community-based conservation.

Nongpoh is on NH-6 approximately 55 km from Guwahati and 50 km from Shillong. MPRTC and private bus services on the Guwahati-Shillong highway.

🌿 Seasonal Context

The orange and pineapple harvest seasons (November-January for oranges, June-August for pineapple) are the most commercially active periods. The monsoon (June-September) makes the Khasi Hills most scenic. Christmas is a major community celebration.
