📍 About this Locality

Tura is the headquarters of West Garo Hills district and the largest city in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya, the cultural and administrative capital of the Garo people whose matrilineal social organisation and distinctive cultural traditions give western Meghalaya a character distinct from the Khasi Hills around Shillong. The Nokrek National Park and Biosphere Reserve near Tura is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the origin of the citrus species, containing wild relatives of oranges and citrus fruits that make it globally significant for biodiversity conservation.

📜 Historical Roots

The Garo people, like the Khasi, are a matrilineal community whose cultural traditions and relationship with the forest have been maintained through centuries of autonomous existence in the Garo Hills. The Wangala festival (hundred drums festival) celebrated in November is the most important Garo cultural event.

The Wangala festival (November) is the most important and spectacular Garo cultural celebration with the hundred drums performance being one of Northeast Bharat most extraordinary folk cultural events. Christmas is observed with great enthusiasm. The monsoon (June-September) makes the Nokrek forest most lush.
