📍 About this Locality

Lunglei is the headquarters of Lunglei district in southern Mizoram, the second largest city in the state and an important administrative and commercial centre for southern Mizoram. The city is perched on a ridge in the Mizo Hills and has a character typical of Mizoram hill towns, with steep roads, terraced construction and the vibrant community life of the Mizo people. The district borders the Chittagong Hill Tracts region and has cultural connections with the related communities across this international boundary.

📜 Historical Roots

Lunglei has been an administrative centre in the Mizo Hills since the pre-independence period when it served as a subdivisional headquarters. The development of a Mizo identity rooted in Christianity, literacy and community solidarity was strongly shaped by the church institutions established in Lunglei and the surrounding district.

Christmas is the most significant festival. Chapchar Kut (March) celebrates the spring season. The monsoon (June-September) brings heavy rainfall to the Mizo Hills. The winter months (November-February) are most pleasant for the high-altitude hill town.
