Kohima is the capital of Nagaland, a dramatic hill city perched on a ridge at 1,444 metres, renowned for the Battle of Kohima (1944) which was one of the most significant battles of the Second World War described as the Stalingrad of the East. The battle memorial at the former tennis court of the Deputy Commissioner residence, with its moving inscription, is one of the most visited war memorials in Asia. Kohima is also celebrated for the Hornbill Festival held every year in December, which has become one of Bharat most spectacular cultural festivals showcasing all the Naga tribes traditions in one extraordinary week-long celebration.
The Battle of Kohima (April-June 1944) was the turning point of the Burma campaign in the Second World War. The Japanese forces attempting to capture India were stopped at Kohima in a 64-day siege and battle of extraordinary ferocity. The memorial inscription reads: When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.
Kohima has no railway station. Dimapur (74 km) is the nearest railway station and airport. NH-2 road connectivity. NSTC and private bus services from Dimapur.
The Hornbill Festival (1-10 December) is Kohima most spectacular event when all Naga tribes gather at Kisama Heritage Village to perform their traditional dances, music, sports and crafts.
