Udaipur in Tripura (not to be confused with the Rajasthan city) is the headquarters of Gomati district in southern Tripura, a town of significant cultural and religious importance for the Tripuri community. The Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur, housing the goddess Tripura Sundari (Maa Soroshi), is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Bharat, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country and the spiritual anchor of Tripura identity. The sacred pond (Kalyan Sagar) adjacent to the temple and the surrounding landscape create a devotional setting of great power.

📜 Historical Roots

The Tripura Sundari temple at Udaipur is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in Bharat, where the right foot of Sati is believed to have fallen according to the Puranic tradition. The temple has been a pilgrimage centre for centuries and the goddess Tripura Sundari (from whom the state of Tripura is believed to derive its name) is the presiding deity of the entire state, giving Udaipur a significance for Tripura identity that goes far beyond its geographical location.

The Diwali festival sees the Tripura Sundari temple at its most brilliantly illuminated and most heavily visited. Navratri (September-October) is the most significant pilgrimage period at this Shakti Peetha. Durga Puja is celebrated with great fervour. The Kharchi Puja (July) is the Tripuri tribal festival. The post-monsoon October-February season is most pleasant for pilgrimage and visiting.
