Arrah is the headquarters of Bhojpur district β a historic city on the Son river in western Bihar whose name is inseparably linked with the legendary Siege of Arrah (1857) β one of the most remarkable episodes of Bharat's first war of independence, when a small group held out against a vastly superior force in a heroic act of resistance. The city has an active commercial character as the administrative hub for the agriculturally rich Bhojpur region.
The Bhojpur region is the heartland of the Bhojpuri cultural tradition β the language, music, folk songs and the diaspora culture of the Bhojpuri-speaking community that has spread from here across Bharat and the world. The Bhojpuri film and music industry, whose songs and stories carry the cultural memory of this region, has roots in the traditions of the Arrah area.
The Siege of Arrah in 1857 β when a handful of civilians and loyal sepoys held the Arrah House against thousands of rebel troops for two weeks β is one of the most dramatic episodes of the 1857 uprising. The Bhojpur region has a proud tradition of resistance and the Bhojpuri people's contribution to Bharat's labour history β as indentured workers who carried Bhojpuri culture to Mauritius, Trinidad, Fiji and Surinam β is one of the great diaspora stories of the 19th century.
Arrah railway station on the Howrah-Delhi main line. NH-30 road connectivity. Approximately 60 km from Patna.
Chhath Puja (October-November) is the most important festival in Arrah β the worship of the sun god on the Son river ghats draws the entire community. Shravan month sees Kanwar Yatra devotees active through the city. The monsoon (June-September) fills the Son river dramatically. Ram Navami (March-April) is celebrated with processions. Makar Sankranti (January) marks the harvest season.
