Biharsharif is the headquarters of Nalanda district β a city of profound historical significance as it sits in the shadow of ancient Nalanda, the great Buddhist university that was one of the greatest centres of learning in the ancient world. The Nalanda Mahavihara β whose ruins spread across a vast area nearby β was the world's first residential university, attracting scholars from across Asia between the 5th and 12th centuries CE before its destruction.
Biharsharif itself is known for the Dargah of Hazrat Makhdum Saheb β one of the most important Sufi shrines in eastern Bharat, drawing devotees of all faiths throughout the year. The city reflects the layered civilisational history of the Nalanda region β Buddhist, Hindu and Sufi Islamic traditions have all left their mark on this landscape.
The Nalanda Mahavihara, founded in the 5th century CE and flourishing for over 700 years, was one of the greatest intellectual institutions in human history β at its peak housing over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers who pursued Buddhist philosophy, logic, grammar, medicine and mathematics. Scholars including Xuanzang and I Ching from China documented its magnificence. Nalanda is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Bharat's most important civilisational monuments.
Biharsharif railway station on the Patna-Gaya line. NH-20 road connectivity. Approximately 75 km from Patna. Nalanda ruins accessible by road from Biharsharif.
The Nalanda ruins and the Nalanda University new campus are most pleasant to visit in the cool winter months of October-February. The Dargah of Hazrat Makhdum Saheb sees its highest attendance during the annual Urs (death anniversary celebration). Chhath Puja (October-November) is the most important community festival. Shravan month sees Kanwar Yatra pilgrims active through the region.
