Bhagalpur is one of Bihar's most important cities — the Silk City of Bharat, renowned for the Tussar silk (known as Bhagalpuri silk or Katia silk) woven by the weaver communities of this city and its surroundings, whose texture, natural sheen and distinctive weave make it one of the most prized silks in Bharat. The Bhagalpuri silk saree, worn at festivals and weddings across eastern Bharat, is a living tradition of craft excellence.

Bhagalpur sits on the Ganga at a point where the river supports a significant population of the endangered Gangetic river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) — the national aquatic animal of Bharat. The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary around Bhagalpur is one of the most important conservation sites for this critically endangered species.

📜 Historical Roots

The ancient Vikramshila Mahavihara — another great Buddhist university of the Pala period, founded in the 8th century CE — stood near modern Bhagalpur. Together with Nalanda, Vikramshila represented the pinnacle of Buddhist intellectual and spiritual learning in medieval Bharat. The ruins of Vikramshila are one of Bihar's most important archaeological sites.

🌿 Seasonal Context

Chhath Puja (October-November) on the Bhagalpur Ganga ghats is one of the most atmospheric celebrations of this greatest of Bihari festivals. The Gangetic dolphin population is most visible during the cooler months (November-March) when the river is calmer. Bhagalpuri silk demand peaks before the festival and wedding season (October-December). Shravan brings Kanwar Yatra energy through the city.
