Dumka is the headquarters of Dumka district and the sub-capital of Jharkhand, a city in the Santhal Parganas region with deep significance as the cultural and administrative heartland of the Santhal tribal community, one of Bharat's largest and most culturally distinctive Adivasi peoples. The Santhals' Hul rebellion of 1855, led by the brothers Sidho and Kanhu Murmu against exploitative zamindars and pre-independence administration, is one of the most significant tribal uprisings in Bharat's history and is commemorated as Hul Diwas on 30 June with great pride across the Santhal community.
The Hul rebellion of 1855, in which over 60,000 Santhal warriors under Sidho and Kanhu Murmu rose against zamindars and pre-independence period rule, was one of the most significant anti-colonial uprisings before 1857. The Santhals' demand for justice, their willingness to sacrifice their lives and the brutal suppression of the uprising are a foundational chapter in Jharkhand's identity as a land of Adivasi resistance and pride.
Dumka railway station is on the Bhagalpur-Dumka branch line. NH-114 road connectivity. Approximately 260 km from Ranchi.
Hul Diwas (30 June) is the most significant civic and cultural event in Dumka, commemorating the Santhal Hul rebellion with community gatherings, cultural programmes and tributes to Sidho and Kanhu Murmu. The Santhal Sohrai festival (post-harvest, October-November) is the community's most joyful celebration, marked by distinctive Sohrai paintings on home walls.
