Sasaram is the headquarters of Rohtas district and one of Bihar's most historically resonant cities β the birthplace and resting place of Sher Shah Suri, the Afghan ruler whose brief but extraordinarily impactful reign (1540-1545 CE) transformed the administration of Bharat. The magnificent mausoleum of Sher Shah Suri β standing in the middle of an artificial lake in Sasaram β is one of the finest examples of Indo-Afghan architecture in Bharat and a monument of exceptional beauty.
Sher Shah Suri's contributions to Bharat's administrative infrastructure β the Grand Trunk Road (rebuilt and extended), the postal system, the land revenue system and the standardisation of weights and measures β were so foundational that the Mughal emperors who succeeded him largely retained them. This legacy makes Sasaram a city of genuine national historical importance.
Sher Shah Suri β born in Sasaram β overthrew the Mughal emperor Humayun and ruled Bharat for just five years, yet his administrative reforms were so comprehensive and effective that they became the foundation of Mughal governance and influenced Bharat's administration for centuries. The reconstruction of the Grand Trunk Road from Bengal to Kabul, planted with shade trees and punctuated with sarais (rest houses), was one of the great infrastructure achievements of medieval Bharat.
Sasaram railway station on the Howrah-Delhi main line. NH-19 (Grand Trunk Road) passes through Sasaram β a direct connection to its Sher Shah heritage. Approximately 150 km from Patna.
The Sher Shah Suri mausoleum and its lake are most beautiful in the post-monsoon season (October-February) when the surrounding gardens are green and the lake full. Chhath Puja (October-November) is the most important community festival. The Rohtas Fort β one of Bharat's largest β is accessible from Sasaram and most pleasant in the winter months. Shravan month sees Shiva temple activity across the city.
