Hazaribagh is a pleasant hill town in Jharkhand, the headquarters of Hazaribagh district and one of the most agreeable urban environments in the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The name means Thousand Gardens and the town's open spaces, the Hazaribagh Lake and the relatively clean environment give it a character quite different from the industrial cities of Jharkhand. The Hazaribagh National Park, with its population of leopards, gaur and diverse wildlife, is the region's important protected area. The town is also known for the Hazaribagh school of Sohrai and Khovar paintings, a distinctive tribal art tradition practised by Kurmi and Oraon women that has gained national recognition.
Hazaribagh was an important administrative centre during the pre-independence period in the Chota Nagpur region, known for its relatively pleasant climate compared to the plains. The Sohrai painting tradition of the Hazaribagh region, practised by Kurmi women on the walls of homes during the harvest festival of Sohrai, is one of Bharat's most significant tribal art traditions and has been nominated for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition.
Hazaribagh Road railway station on the Grand Chord line (Howrah-Delhi via Dhanbad). NH-33 road connectivity. Approximately 100 km from Ranchi.
The Sohrai festival (October-November, coinciding with Diwali) is when the most elaborate Sohrai and Khovar paintings are created on home walls across the Hazaribagh region, transforming villages into open-air art galleries. Karam festival (August) is the Adivasi community's most important seasonal celebration. The Hazaribagh National Park is best visited October-June. The post-monsoon October-February season is most pleasant climatically.
