Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand, a pleasant hill city on the Chota Nagpur Plateau whose elevation of approximately 650 metres gives it a more temperate climate than the surrounding plains, earning it the title Summer Capital of undivided Bihar before Jharkhand's formation. The city is the administrative, educational and commercial hub of one of Bharat's richest states by mineral wealth, home to significant deposits of coal, iron ore, copper, uranium and other minerals. Ranchi is known for its waterfalls, the most famous being Hundru Falls and Jonha Falls, and for its significant Adivasi cultural heritage. The city is also celebrated as the hometown of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of the greatest cricket captains in history.

📜 Historical Roots

Ranchi's modern significance as a capital city began with the formation of Jharkhand on 15 November 2000, carving out a new state from Bihar to address the longstanding demand of the tribal communities of the Chota Nagpur Plateau for self-governance. Birsa Munda, the great Munda tribal leader who led the Ulgulan (Great Rebellion) against both pre-independence period rule and feudal exploitation in 1899-1900, is the founding hero of Jharkhand's identity and the inspiration for the state's formation.

🌿 Seasonal Context

Karma festival (August-September) is the most important Adivasi festival in Ranchi, celebrating the Karma tree as a symbol of life and prosperity with community song and dance. The waterfalls are most spectacular during and immediately after the monsoon (July-October). Sarhul (spring festival, March-April) celebrates the sal tree blossoms. Chhath Puja (October-November) is widely observed. Birsa Munda Jayanti (15 November) coincides with Jharkhand Foundation Day.
