Muzaffarpur is the largest city in north Bihar and the commercial capital of the Tirhut region — a major urban centre on the Burhi Gandak river known across Bharat for the Shahi Litchi, the world's most prized litchi variety whose unique flavour and aroma are the product of the specific soil and climate of the Muzaffarpur-Vaishali belt. The Muzaffarpur litchi harvest (May-June) is one of Bharat's most eagerly anticipated seasonal food events.

Muzaffarpur is a significant educational and commercial hub for north Bihar with B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University, several medical and engineering colleges and the commercial activity of a regional capital. The city has deep connections to the independence movement — it was here that Khudiram Bose carried out one of the first acts of revolutionary resistance against pre-independence era rule in 1908.

📜 Historical Roots

Muzaffarpur was the site of the Muzaffarpur bombing of 1908 — when Khudiram Bose, aged just 18, threw a bomb at the carriage of a British judge in one of the earliest acts of revolutionary violence against pre-independence period rule. Khudiram Bose was subsequently hanged, becoming one of the youngest martyrs of Bharat's freedom movement and a celebrated hero of Bengal and Bihar.

The litchi harvest season (May-June) is Muzaffarpur's most celebrated time — the Shahi litchi's brief availability makes it the most eagerly awaited seasonal fruit in east Bharat. Chhath Puja (October-November) is the most important festival — Muzaffarpur's Burhi Gandak river ghats fill with devotees. Shravan month sees Kanwar Yatra devotees active. The Tirhut Mahotsav cultural festival celebrates the region's heritage annually.
