Motihari is the headquarters of East Champaran district β a city forever associated with one of the most transformative events in Bharat's freedom movement: the Champaran Satyagraha of 1917, when Mahatma Gandhi first employed satyagraha (non-violent resistance) as a political tool on Indian soil, in response to the exploitation of indigo farmers by pre-independence era planters. This first satyagraha in Bharat makes Champaran a sacred site in the story of Indian independence.
Motihari is also the birthplace of George Orwell β the British author born here in 1903 β though the city's own identity is far more significantly defined by its central role in the Champaran Satyagraha. The surrounding district is agriculturally productive, growing sugarcane, paddy and vegetables on the fertile Terai land near the Nepal border.
The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was a watershed moment in Bharat's freedom struggle β when Gandhi arrived in Champaran to investigate the conditions of indigo farmers forced to grow indigo under the exploitative tinkathia system, his investigation and subsequent resistance movement demonstrated that peaceful non-cooperation could challenge and defeat unjust authority. This lesson would guide the entire independence movement.
Motihari railway station on the Muzaffarpur-Raxaul line. NH-28 road connectivity. Approximately 155 km from Patna.
The Champaran Satyagraha sites are most visited during the cool winter months (October-February). Chhath Puja (October-November) is the most important festival in this predominantly Hindu community β celebrated at local water bodies with great devotion. Shravan month sees Shiva temple activity. The sugarcane harvest runs November-April through the local sugar mills. Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) is observed with particular significance here.
