Darbhanga is one of Bihar's most historically and culturally significant cities β the historic seat of the Darbhanga Raj, the most influential Maithil Brahmin zamindari in north Bihar whose patronage of art, music, literature and scholarship made Darbhanga a centre of Maithili culture for centuries. The city is the cultural capital of the Mithila region β the ancient land of Janaki (Sita), whose heritage includes Mithila painting (Madhubani art), the Maithili language and the intellectual traditions of the Maithil Brahmins who produced generations of Sanskrit scholars.
Darbhanga is known for the Darbhanga Gharana of classical music β one of the most prestigious traditions in North Indian classical music, producing legendary vocalists. Lalit Narayan Mithila University is the city's educational anchor. The Darbhanga Raj's palaces and lakes add architectural heritage to this culturally rich city.
Mithila β the ancient kingdom whose capital was Janakpur (now in Nepal) and whose heritage extends into Darbhanga and the surrounding region β is one of the most ancient and culturally rich regions of Bharat. It was the home of Janaka, philosopher-king and father of Sita, whose court was the setting of great philosophical dialogues recorded in the Upanishads. The Maithili intellectual tradition, expressed through Sanskrit scholarship, Maithili literature and the visual art of Madhubani painting, is one of Bharat's living civilisational treasures.
